Grades: Spurs at Rockets – Preseason Game #5

Sitting most of their main players, the San Antonio Spurs got blown out by the Houston Rockets, 129-107. It was the final preseason game for the Spurs, who played without Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, Chris Paul, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson. San Antonio finished exhibition play with a record of 2-3.

Stats: Spurs at Rockets

Spurs at Rockets – Final Grades

Harrison Barnes

Barnes looked as spry as we’ve seen him in the preseason. He was ready and willing to let it fly when open. His defense wasn’t too impressive though; hopefully he has another gear for the regular season.

Grade: B

Julian Champagnie

After being on fire for much of the preseason, Champagnie ended things with a dud. The only three-pointer he hit was a difficult step-back three. Champagnie made up for some of his offensive woes by being extra active on defense.

Grade: C

Tre Jones

Jones’ passing was one of the highlights on an otherwise dreary night for the Spurs. He finished with eight assists and zero turnovers. Scoring-wise, he was mostly a zero and his defense was nothing to write home about either.

Grade: C+

Zach Collins

The good: Collins looks healthy after offseason shoulder surgery. His passing keeps getting better. The bad: Collins’ defense was lacking strength. He could have been better on the boards and I thought he shot it too much on the offensive end. Add in some misses on easy shots and it was definitely a subpar outing for Collins.

Grade: C

Malaki Branham

This was clearly Branham’s best game of the preseason. His three-point shooting didn’t look good and his defense was nothing special but the rest of his outing was a step in the right direction. His passing was much better than normal and his scoring within the arc looked dangerous.

Grade: B+

Stephon Castle

Castle hit only 1-of-5 three-pointers but there wasn’t much else to complain about. He looked like a competent ball-handler and his passing was a positive. Defensively, he competed. Castle ran the court and his athleticism flashed a few times. All in all, it was a successful game … and a successful preseason showing overall for the rookie.

Grade: B

Sidy Cissoko

Cissoko showed something in this preseason finale. He scored 15 points while hitting a three against the Rockets. Sure, he had a few easy dunks to pad his stats but for a player who has had so much troubling scoring on the NBA level, Cissoko showing life on the offensive end was notable. Add in strong defense and good rebounding while limiting fouls — and this was exactly the type of game I’ve been waiting to see from Cissoko.

Grade: A-

Blake Wesley

Eh, these final two preseason games have been underwhelming for Wesley. His defense has been active but he’s not making a difference on that end. His passing has been okay but his overall playmaking has been lackluster. Worst of all, his lack of touch when looking to score the ball has been troublesome.

Grade: D+

Sandro Mamukelashvili

Mamukelashvili hit 3-of-6 three-pointers against the Rockets to put a bow on his red-hot preseason shooting from deep. If he can hit threes consistently, that’ll make it easier for the coaching staff to put him in the rotation. Other than his threes, Mamukelashvili mostly struggled in Houston.

Grade: C

Charles Bassey

Ten points and five rebounds in 14 minutes accurately paints the picture that Bassey appears to be healthy following his torn ACL suffered in December. He’s bouncy, his touch is still there and his reflexes are as quick as ever. It’ll be interesting to see if he can work his way into the rotation this season.

Grade: A-

Brandon Boston Jr.

I’m guessing Boston didn’t do enough to make the team. His ball-handling and scoring mentality at his size are intriguing traits — but that’s unlikely to be enough.

Grade: B-

David Duke Jr.

Duke is on a two-way contract and that’s probably where he will stay. After suffering an undisclosed injury in training camp, he was able to make his preseason debut against the Rockets. I thought he looked solid. He’s smart, he competes and he has good instincts. That’s the outline of a useful two-way player.

Grade: B

Malachi Flynn

Like Boston, I can’t imagine that Flynn has done enough to make the team. Perhaps the Spurs opt to keep a veteran point guard, but that has to be an unlikely result at this point.

Grade: B-

Pop

Pop basically decided to use this as a scrimmage by sitting his main cogs. I mean, it’s a bit weird to rest youngsters in preseason play — but it’s not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things.

Grade: C
